Product You, from Outerview for Founders

Product You

You've spent years making other people's businesses work.

You know your field inside out. You know you could build something of your own. Product You is six 1:1 sessions that turn what you know into a business: the offer, the product, the brand and the first customers.

Sound familiar?

You're the expert everyone calls. You're just not the one getting paid for it.

What you know

  • People ask your advice all the time. Ex-colleagues, friends of friends, the new hire who just wants ten minutes. You give it away for free and think "I should be charging for this."
  • You've had the "I could do this myself" thought more times than you'd admit. Usually on a Sunday evening.
  • You can explain what you do brilliantly in a meeting. Ask you to put a price on it and you go quiet.
  • You've got a notes app full of ideas. A course, a consultancy, an agency, a framework. None of them have left the notes app.
  • Every time you look at going independent, the to-do list is so long you close the laptop.

What it's costing you

  • Someone with half your experience has packaged it up, put a price on it and is selling it to the people who should be calling you.
  • You build a website before you've got an offer, then wonder why nobody buys from it.
  • You're stuck choosing between staying put, where it's safe but someone else owns what you've built, and jumping without a plan.
  • Another year goes by. The idea is still good. You're just a year older and it's still not real.

Expertise isn't a business. A product is.

Most experts who try to go it alone start in the wrong place. They build the logo, the website and the LinkedIn banner first, and work out what they're actually selling last.

It's like fitting out a shop before you've decided what goes on the shelves. Lovely sign. Nothing to buy.

Product You runs it the right way round: who you're for, what hurts, what you sell and at what price, then the product, the brand and the customers. In that order.

Two ways in

Same six sessions, whichever business you're building

Build a services business

You want to set up a recruitment, HR or people services business of your own: an agency, a search firm or a specialist consultancy. You know the work. You need the offer, the pricing, the brand and a way to win the first clients.

Package your expertise

You want to turn what you know into coaching, consulting or a programme people buy. You've got years of know-how in your head. You need it turned into a named method, a priced offer and something you can deliver again and again.

Where you are, and where you'll be

Right now

  • Years of expertise, and no way to sell it
  • A list of ideas, and no idea which one to start with
  • No idea what to charge, so you'd probably charge too little
  • "I'll start when I've got the website sorted"
  • Nobody who'd buy, because nobody knows you're selling

Six sessions from now

  • A clear buyer, their pain points and a named method that answers them
  • A priced ladder: a way in, a flagship and a next step
  • A product you can actually deliver, with a session format to run it
  • A brand statement and an offer page that sells it
  • A warm list, outreach messages and booked calls, or your first client

Six sessions, six modules

Each module has a core we do together, and optional deeper builds you take on as you need them. Every session ends with something you can use the same week.

1
Session 1

Pain and method

Everything else is built on this, so it comes first. Who exactly you're for, what hurts, in their words, and where they want to end up. Then your method: a name, three or four pillars, and a line that says what you're not.

You leave withYour pain-point doc, From → To lines, a named method and your positioning line
2
Session 2

The ladder

One flagship, one way in, one next step, and the pricing logic behind each. You also build a warm list of 20 people who already know you, so the conversations start now, not at the end.

You leave withA priced ladder and a named warm list
3
Session 3

Build the product

What a flagship actually needs: a clear promise, a structure, and a rhythm of prep, session and follow-through. We look at the formats you could choose (a diagnostic, a programme, a playbook, a retained service) and pick the one that fits you.

You leave withA flagship outline and the format you'll deliver it in
4
Session 4

Brand and storefront

One brand, one clear offer page and a way to book a call. Not a ten-page website. And how to capture your first result, so you've got proof to sell with.

You leave withA brand statement and the copy for your offer page
5
Session 5

Get customers

Warm first, always. A low-friction way in, giving away enough real insight that people see the quality, and a discovery call that doesn't feel like a pitch. Content and paid come later, when there's something to amplify.

You leave withA lead magnet and your outreach messages
6
Session 6

Launch and tighten

Run the calls, deliver to your first client, look honestly at what happened and reshape the offer. Every business gets its first version wrong somewhere. The point is to find out fast.

You leave withA refined offer, a discovery call script, and your first client or booked calls

How it works

This is for you if

  • You've got real expertise, usually in recruitment, HR or the people side of business, and want to build something of your own with it
  • You're senior, or getting there, and tired of building value for someone else
  • You want an offer that sells, not a logo and a website
  • You're ready to do the work between sessions

It isn't for you if

  • You want a get-rich-quick system. This builds a real business, one decision at a time.
  • You're looking for funding or a tech startup playbook. This is for expertise-led businesses.
  • You want someone to do it for you. You build it. I make sure you build the right thing in the right order.

Who runs it

Jay Odeka

Jay Andrew Odeka, founder of Outerview

I trained as a solicitor, walked away from law and went into recruitment. In 2017 I co-founded Wundertalent, and I've built more businesses since, each one from the knowledge in my own head.

I've also spent 15+ years on the hiring side: 300+ placements across 100+ companies, and more than half a million CVs read. I've seen exactly what experts are worth, and how few of them ever charge for it.

Product You is the order I wish I'd built in the first time. Not business theory. The actual sequence that turns expertise into something people buy.

Outerview for Founders

Build it. Be seen. Lead it.

Product You is where you build the business. Be the Brand makes your name work as hard as you do once it's running. Stay on Course keeps you leading it, instead of it leading you.

Most people start with Product You, then pick up the others as the business grows.

Questions

Do I need to have left my job?

No. Plenty of people build the offer and win their first client while they're still employed. Knowing exactly what you're selling, and that someone will buy it, makes the jump a lot less scary.

I don't have a business idea yet, just expertise. Is that enough?

Yes. That's what Session 1 is for. We start with who you could help and what hurts, and the offer comes out of that.

Is this only for recruitment and HR people?

That's where I know the market best, so it's where the examples come from. If you've got deep expertise in another field and want to sell it as a service or a programme, book a call and I'll tell you honestly whether it fits.

Will you build my website?

No. You'll leave with the brand statement and the copy for your offer page, which is the hard part. One page that sells beats a big site that doesn't.

What if six sessions isn't enough?

The core is built to fit six sessions. The optional builds are your follow-up list, and you can take them on alone or keep working with me.

You already know enough to sell. Let's build the thing you sell.

Book a free 30-minute call. Tell me what you know and what you want to build. I'll tell you honestly whether there's a business in it, and where I'd start.
